In an effort to dispell some of the rumors that are apparently swirling around, here's the text of Capt. Jimbo's latest report on the status of things at the Marina. This was his posting on the inthebite.com message board two days ago:

Thank you Eric! I was about to put this report up when I saw yours. I don't know
where all the rumors are coming from but I have been in Venezuela for three
weeks on the Blue Max, Two of them in Porto-Fino and Mitch has been here for
months on the NuCo2. If anybody is interested in the truth about what is going
on call! My cell # is 011-58-416-820-8636.
I just wanted to send you a note on the "state of things" at the marina and the
area. I know you have heard alot of stuff over the past few months. As for the
marina operations Macuto is doing a great job and is as helpful as he has always
been. If I need something he either gets it for me or tells me where to go buy
it.
Amazingly the town has come back more than I can believe after being there last
year. I would have to say it is better than good after what happened just 2
years ago. Yes, there are still remains of the slides on the road in from the
airport, but there is a road now! The entire down town area is back to life.
Taxi stands with drivers, Police are there as they normally were, McDonalds,
Wendys, Kennedy Chicken, all the hardware stores and most of the other stores
are open, unfortunatly El Porton is still closed. I know Jeff is not happy when
we go out on the street at night but Martin, Jaime, Lucas and I were out last
Friday till about 2:00 and there was not a hint of any problem anywhere. The
people are friendly, the grocery stores are better, the ATM works! It looks as
if pride has returned to the people and things are coming back better than
before.
So I say BULL SHI* to everybody talking about it being under military law and
gun fights in the streets. Makes me wonder what charter fleet they may own or
run in other countries.
I still don't know the manager at the restraunt but Jeff promises the food is
going to be better. The grounds are looking good, and I am sure the rooms are
the same as always. The pool table has been getting a work out as there are not
many places to go in the evenings.
One thing that would really help is if we could get some peolpe down to go
fishing. I have not been putting any reports on the internet out of respect to
the attack in N.Y. and DC. That will change begining Monday Oct 01. We (captains
and mates) have been fun fishing since the 11th. and the fish are there! I flew
home for a few days for a couple reasons. 1) it was my birthday. 2) so if
anybody asks me I can say there is nothing wrong with flying. The security in
Caracas airport is better and I was stopped in Miami for 45 minutes once they
saw all the stamps in my passport. Yes, that made me feel better, I was not
upset knowing they are doing thier jobs.
Here comes my "FLAG WAVING AMERICAN" speech. Anybody that was thinking about
coming down to fish has to do it now, more than ever! We are Americans, not a
land of cowards. If a snake bites us, we kill it. If we don't get back to doing
the things we normally do the "Towel Head" wins. In fact I do not care if you
come fishing. Just go get on a plane and fly somewhere, have lunch and fly home.

Venezuela's telephone area code system has changed (again, without notice). If you have an old cell phone # for someone (or for us), you need to add a 4 (four) to it, as follows:
Macuto's old #, from the USA, was 011-58-14-610-9271; his new # is 011-58-414-610-9271
Jean Francois' old # was 011-58-16-824-3874; his new # is 011-58-416-824-3874
Sorry for the confusion, but we just found out ourselves....

NuCo2 released 10 white marlin, 1 blue marlin and 1 spearfish yesterday. Pretty work!
As usual, "whitey" is here before most of the visiting boats come in, but more of our friends should be arriving soon. Come on down!
A list of the boats at (or soon expected at) Marina Portofino is now available at The List
